Sobe vs. Mims was the main event. But the winner of the under card has the BAGS community buzzing.
Kirk Stimpert of Germantown, WI is a relatively new name on the BAGS scene, but after a few short weeks he's
already turning heads. Just four weeks ago, 'Stimpjuice' announced his presence by joining the BAGS Century Club with a 102.
Now he has a new title to add - tournament champion!
In a display of BAGS skill rarely seen before, Stimpert put on a show for the large crowd that came out for the BAGS Away tournament at Cabana Jo's in Prescott, WI. As the pressure grew, so did his scores as Stimpert fed off the moment, and the boisterous crowd, en route to the title and a $300 first place prize.
With four of the seven known Century Club members in attendance, everyone knew the scores in the 32-man tournament would be tremendous. But no one could have imagined what was about to unfold.
It all started with David Crawford. Having driven up to Cabana Jo's from Germantown, WI with Stimpert, 'Crawdaddy' was rumored to be one of the better players in attendance. And this time, the rumors were true. Crawford stormed into the finals by knocking off TWO Century Club members - his friend Stimpert and tournament director Brett Rossen.
But Stimpert was far from done.
Firing nothing but 90's, Stimpert blazed his way into a rematch against his driving partner. But having lost to Crawford once already, Stimpert would have to win twice for the title! He was more than up for the challenge.
With cameras rolling and fans hollering, Stimpert took the first game 92-77. Leaving one game to decide the champion.
Had Crawford been playing any other competitor, victory might have been assured after he sunk his first 12 bags. Problem was, Stimpert did it too - and all of his were 5-pointers!
Back and forth the two sunk shot after shot. Neither giving the other any breathing room. It was a performance that left audience members' jaws on the floor. When the smoke cleared, Crawford had posted an amazing score of 91. But again, Stimpert was just too much - tossing an astonishing 104 for the title!
On a side note, the combined 195 score between the two competitors is the highest recorded head-to-head total in BAGS history!
It all added up to one dominating performance from Stimpert - one that had the top players looking over their shoulders. Even World Champion Timmy Mims was heard saying that he thought Stimpert was the man to beat in Bags. Especially after Stimpert took down Mims in a head-to-head match after the tournament - though Mims may not have been in the best physical shape at the time.
But however you look at what transpired at Cabana Jo's, one thing is for sure - Stimpert is a rising star. And don't be surprised if you hear his name a lot in the future!
