It's all over. The challenger from South Carolina has done it. Timmy Mims has knocked out Steven Sobe and claimed the title!
In a match that became an instant classic, Mims out-tossed the former champ from start to finish to win 4 games to 1 in a best of seven series. And it was almost a clean sweep! If not for a miraculous shot in Game 1, the large and raucous crowd at Cabana Jo's could have brought in the brooms.
But what a shot! Competitor David Crawford, who drove 5 hours to attend the match, called it "the best shot ever made!" Down two and with only one toss left, Sobe needed to sink his bag to win. Facing a 13 mph crosswind and a crowded hole, less than half was showing, the champ hemmed and hawed for what seemed like an eternity. And then he dropped in a perfect swish for the win!
But Mims never let it get that close again. For any doubters, Mims is the real deal. Not only did he ooze confidence, he had the skills to back it up. Mims tossed 5-pointers at will and Sobe, desperate to keep up, just couldn’t withstand the onslaught. After game 4 Mims coasted to the title – one he doesn't plan on giving up any time soon!
